Thanks for visiting! I am just starting up with this having-a-website-for-a-product thing, so I’m curious about what others think. Not only in terms of the site itself, but the future of what The Dungeon Circuit could be.
A Product?
I’ve considered making the game into something purchasable, and have had several ideas:
- A traditional rules book, with players guides and supplements.
- A subscription-based model, that would have smaller but more frequent content delivered to subscribers on a periodic basis. Possibilities:
- Digital-only publishing
- As an extra here, could share things like the spreadsheets used to make characters.
- If physically published, these might be in a “comic book” physical format: softcover stitched booklets (not necessarily an illustrated-like-a-comic-book publication).
- Full Splurge Mode – Digital and Physical. This would have some subset of extras with each edition:
- Printed Magic Item Cards
- Full size maps
- Gimcracks and Geegaws: Pop-O-matic d100s, dice sets, custom minis, that sort of thing.
On second thought, I should expand Gimcracks and Geegaws to a new tabletop RPG about being an Adventure Shopkeeper, where you constantly chase “The Bottom Line”.
Crowdfunding
The above section suggests the inevitability of that most typical of 2010’s endeavors, crowdfunding. I’m a leery of doing this, not only because I have heard plenty of horror stories of Kickstarters or Patreons gone wrong, but also because the standard of expectation for tabletop RPG-related content is incredibly high right now. Looking at you, Critical Role.
That said, if I want to offer a subscription model, I think I’d have to do something like this.
Expanded Public Games
I’Il probably need host the game a lot more in order to increase awareness, both inside and outside of conventions. But as the play style of The Dungeon Circuit is as a one-shot, will people get burnt out on the game if I am hosting more frequently?
